When my boyfriend first suggested using Amazon Fresh, Amazon’s mobile grocery delivery service, my immediate response was, “Are we really that lazy?” The answer to that question is no, no we’re not. We’re each late-20s, tech savvy, family business-owning, freelancing workers with long hours, family responsibilities, and very little time to squeeze everything in during the week.
Our lives are constantly backlogged with things we should have done, need to do, and want to do. Although I was a skeptical, not of the service itself, but of my own feelings of self-motivation and relying on a service to feed me, I was completely satisfied after my first Amazon Fresh delivery.
We have a two-person household plus one ridiculously dependent and overly attached dog. (Okay, so I might be the one overly attached.) During one week we know we have a family dinner out on Monday’s, and either go out or order in on Friday nights. So we have three weekdays where we have to be adults and are in charge of feeding ourselves. We also pack our work lunches four out of the five days.
By purchasing our weekly staples; milk, coffee, lunch meat, bread, cereal, pasta, one dinner meat for grilling or crockpot, salad supplies, and a few odds and ends, we not only receive our items next day, but we end up saving more than going to the actual store.
Each Saturday or Sunday night, we log on to the Amazon Fresh website and easily search for groceries to fill our shopping cart. There are so many options, sizes, and items available that you would never think could be delivered. Dry ice, ice packs, and coolers keep frozen and produce goods fresh, while dry items are packed efficiently within the completely identifiable green Amazon delivery bags.
Ordering is simple. After you’ve filled your virtual shopping cart, you can then choose the day and time of your delivery. We always do next day before 7 AM. When I open the front door in the morning to take the dog out, or as my boyfriend says, he takes me out…. our order is ready and waiting for us to unpack. The Amazon delivery drivers are quite stealthy, much like Santa and the Easter Bunny, leaving me goodies wrapped up nicely. Ooh…maybe they’ve unleashed the drones for delivery!
Amazon Fresh also shows you your purchase receipt. They let you know when you order an item if it will be delayed or if it’s out of stock. Your receipt also highlights any items that they could not get in time for delivery. Below is a picture of an order in which they couldn’t deliver my cottage cheese…I know my cheese hating boyfriend was secretly pleased.
Although I don’t believe this service would be an ideal solution for all families, perhaps larger ones, I do believe it’s a great service for all ages of urban city professionals. I feel that it’s just one more convenient service that allows me to focus on other projects without having to take an hour out of my day for shopping.
Amazon Fresh is also great for saving money. I find that when we physically go to the store we end up buying a lot of extra things. Shopping hungry is the worst. Using Amazon Fresh, we buy exactly what is on our list, what we’ve scheduled throughout the week. We used to spend around $180 a week, now we’re spending about $60-70 only buying essential items. Amazon has proven once again why it’s such a force in the online goods industry. Available in Los Angeles and Seattle, it’s definitely worth the subscription. Amazon Fresh Delivery: Lazy or Awesome? Definitely awesome.
